CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

MARVIN

STAGE AGE: 30-40 VOCAL RANGE: C3-B 4

PRESENTING GENDER: MALE

Marvin is a middle-aged Jewish gay man living in the 1970/1980s New York

City. He used to be married to Trina and the couple have a son, Jason. Marvin

left his wife because he is gay, but is still a part of Trina and Jason’s lives as he

tries to balance being a family man with his relationship with his boyfriend

Whizzer. He is a man who wants to have it all. Despite divorcing his wife and

getting involved with a man, he still insists on being a part of Trina’s life, even

after she remarries.

WHIZZER

STAGE AGE: 30’S VOCAL RANGE: E3-C5

PRESENTING GENDER: MALE

Whizzer is Marvin’s new boyfriend, whom he leaves Trina to be with. He is

handsome and suave, and he knows it and could be described as a trophy

boyfriend, sitting at home doing the chores while Marvin is out working.

Whizzer develops a strong bond to Marvin’s son, Jason, who likes Whizzer a lot

and enjoys spending time with him. He likes to look like he has it all together,

but there is a lot more to him than meets the eye.

TRINA

STAGE AGE: 30-40 VOCAL RANGE: B3-E5

PRESENTING GENDER: FEMALE

Trina is Jason’s mother, and the former wife of Marvin. Marvin left Trina to be

with Whizzer, which leaves her emotionally vulnerable and broken. Trina is a

captivating character, we see her both at her best and at her worst as she

attempts to gain control of the curveballs life has thrown at her. She is a

woman that is self-described as someone who holds to the ground as the

ground keeps shifting.

MENDEL

STAGE AGE: 30-40 VOCAL RANGE: C3-B4

PRESENTING GENDER: MALE

Mendel Weisenbachfeld is Marvin’s psychiatrist. He hates his job and is terrible

at it. He also begins to see Trina to help her and falls in love with her (again,

terrible at his job) which naturally makes Marvin mad. While he may be a

questionable psychiatrist, he does have a very genuine way of connecting

with Jason and levelling with him when it comes to Jason spiraling about his

broken family.

JASON

STAGE AGE: 11-13 VOCAL RANGE: G3-D5

PRESENTING GENDER: MALE

Marvin and Trina’s son, who, throughout the course of the show, goes from being 11

to turning 13 and having his Bar Mitzvah. In a lot of ways, Jason is the heart of this

show. He is a boy who needs his father to guide him toward manhood, and yet fears

becoming who his father is. It is his coming-of-age story and his story of slowly

accepting that his family is not that of social norm.

PARENTS: Please be advised that while Jason is a child role,

‘Falsettos’ does contain coarse language and adult themes, so please ensure you do your research and do not hesitate to contact us! We will happily answer any questions you may have.

PLEASE NOTE: The creative team is open to seeing any and all performers who feel they can portray Jason at auditions. Please do not feel that you ‘should not’ audition due to your race, gender identity, etc.

CHARLOTTE

STAGE AGE: 30’S VOCAL RANGE: F3-F5

PRESENTING GENDER: FEMALE

Charlotte is a doctor, and Cordelia’s girlfriend. They are the self-described

‘Lesbians from next door’ as they are Marvin’s neighbors. Charlotte tries to

be a cheerful person, but her job as a doctor during the HIV/AIDS crisis emerging leaves her on edge.

PLEASE NOTE: The Lesbians from Next Door only feature in Act 2.

CORDELIA

STAGE AGE: 30-40 VOCAL RANGE: A3-E5

PRESENTING GENDER: FEMALE

Cordelia is a kosher caterer, and Charlotte’s girlfriend. They are the self-

described ‘lesbians from next door’ as they are Marvin’s neighbors. Cordelia

is quite a cheerful person and she always seems excited when she can

share the food she cooks with other people.

PLEASE NOTE: The Lesbians from Next Door only feature in Act 2.
