For more than five decades, Germantown Community Theatre has been a place where stories are shared, artists are nurtured, and generations of Mid-Southerners come together.
Today, GCT is an intimate 98-seat theatre in Germantown, Tennessee, presenting a full season of live theatre alongside education, youth programming, special events, and community initiatives.

More Than a Theatre. A Part of the Community.
The story of GCT began more than 50 years ago in a much smaller—and very different—space.
1972 — A Theatre Is Born
Germantown Community Theatre was founded in 1972 by the Germantown Women’s Club, originally operating as Germantown Theatre. The fledgling company found its first home in the chapel at St. George’s, where a group of community members began building what would become one of the area's most enduring theatrical institutions.
The first seasons established a tradition that continues today: bringing local performers, artists, volunteers, and audiences together to experience live theatre.
GCT's earliest recorded productions included The Mouse That Roared and You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running during the 1972–73 season. In the years that followed, the theatre steadily expanded its programming, presenting comedies, dramas, musicals, classics, and new works.
Finding a Permanent Home
As Germantown grew, so did its theatre.
In 1981, GCT moved to its current home on Forest Hill-Irene Road, establishing the theatre in the building that audiences know today.
The building itself carries a sense of history and character that is uniquely GCT. What might look like an ordinary old building from the outside has become a beloved gathering place filled with generations of memories—actors waiting in the wings, children discovering theatre for the first time, volunteers greeting patrons, and audiences experiencing the magic of a story told live.
It is a space that feels intimate by design. With just 98 seats, there is a special closeness between the people onstage and the people watching them.
A Home for the Memphis Theatre Community
GCT has grown alongside the Memphis-area theatre community and is recognized as the third-oldest continuously operating theatre company in the Memphis area.
Over the decades, GCT has become more than a place to see a show. It has served as a creative home for generations of actors, directors, designers, technicians, educators, volunteers, and theatre lovers.
The theatre's history is reflected in its production archives, which stretch from 1972 to the present and include hundreds of productions. From You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and South Pacific to A Streetcar Named Desire, The Wizard of Oz, and countless other productions, each season has added another chapter to GCT's story.
Growing the Next Generation
One of the most important chapters in GCT's history has been its commitment to education.
As the theatre community in Germantown evolved, GCT helped fill an important need for theatrical education and opportunities for young people. What began as a theatre company grew into an organization where children, teens, and adults could not only watch theatre—but learn how to create it.
Today, GCT's Education Department offers classes, camps, professional training, youth productions, technical theatre opportunities, and specialized programming throughout the year. Students can explore acting, musical theatre, dance, creative movement, stage management, technical theatre, and more.
GCT also includes two educational productions in each theatrical season, giving young performers the opportunity to take the community stage and experience the collaborative process of producing a show.
The theatre's educational mission extends beyond traditional youth programming. Through initiatives such as A Stage for All and sensory-friendly performances, GCT continues working to make theatre more accessible and welcoming to members of the community with different needs and abilities.

The history of GCT is ultimately a history of people.
It is the actor who stepped onto a stage for the first time.
The child who discovered a love of theatre at summer camp.
The volunteer who has spent countless evenings welcoming audiences.
The director who brought a new story to life.
The designer who created a world from a handful of materials.
The parent who watched their child perform.
The patron who has returned season after season.
And the countless people who have walked through GCT's doors simply looking for a good story and found a community instead.
That is the legacy of Germantown Community Theatre.
The Next Act
GCT is proud of where we've been, but our history is not something we simply look back on. It is something we carry forward.
As GCT looks toward its next chapter, we remain committed to being a place where stories live here—on our stage, in our classrooms, backstage, and throughout the community.
For more than 50 years, generations of artists, volunteers, students, and audiences have gathered under one roof to tell stories, discover their voices, and share experiences that stay with them long after the curtain falls.
The stories continue. The people continue. The community continues.
